Also known as MS Office SR-1 (and incorrectly as Service Pack 1), this patch was issued soon after Office 97’s release back in 1997. It addresses a number of bugs and gives some increased functionality to the Office suite. Initially, this patch was intended for corporate environments and widely considered not worth the trouble for home users. However, in order to apply the Office SR-2a patch, or various security and Y2K fixes, SR-1 must first be installed. Apart from fixing some minor bugs in Office, the patch also includes the Word 6.0/95 Binary Converter for Word 97 allowing documents to be saved in Word 6.0/95 format. There is also enhanced support for Outlook 97’s POP3/SMTP email protocols, Microsoft Access Snapshot, some new viewers and support for Intel’s MMX technology.
