Data recovery can be a tricky process. One of the biggest problems can be when you need to run data recovery software on your PC and have not already installed the program. By installing the recovery software, there is a small chance you may damage the files you are trying to undelete from your hard drive. The best practice is to install the data recovery tool on a different drive – but what about situations where this is not possible? That’s why the data recovery program, Restoration, can be a lifesaver. It is tiny – at just 0.2MB, it’s around five per cent the size of most data recovery software. As a bonus, you don’t need to install or pay for it (Restoration data recovery software is freeware). Simply download the file directly to a floppy disk (assuming you have one on your PC), flash USB or external drive and run it. Pick the drive where you think the files are located and Restoration will list all the files and data it can recover. Next, select the files you want to undelete (you can use the Ctrl and Shift options on your keyboard to select multiple files). Finally, click on the ‘Restore by Copying’ button, choose a destination and your file recovery should be complete.

  • Tips – save the recovered data files onto the flash USB or external drive. This way you can check that you undeleted all the files you wanted without accidentally over-writing the data on the hard disk.
  • If you don’t have access to an external drive, the small size of this program can help minimise data damage to unrecovered files. An alternative is to have someone else burn a CD for you. The data recovery program can be run from a CD or DVD without needing to install it.
