The Wall Street Journal has reported Apple’s acquisition of social media analytics startup Topsy in a deal claimed to be worth more than $200 million. The start-up specializes in analyzing Twitter data and providing insights into trending topics. The purchase is an unusual move for Apple, who at this present point do not seem to have a use for Topsy’s raison d’etre. However, the tech giant has made a habit of buying technology to be used in future products – it did just that with PrimeSense Ltd earlier this year, which eventually led to a new line of processors for the iPhone and iPad.
When asked for comment, Apple refused to divulge any details aside from confirming the purchase; and Topsy did not respond.
