The Intel-designed Communications Daughter Card (CDC) is a riser expansion slot found in laptops, providing analogue functionality for devices such as modems. The CDC is the laptop version of AMR (Audio/Modem Riser) a specification designed to allow for a standard expansion slot manufacturers could adhere to, saving time passing hardware through FCC and ultimately costs.
Modem is a mnemonic for Modulator Demodulator and is the key component in internet connectivity. Since information is sent differently over-the-wire a modem is needed to translate signals into their appropriate format giving your PC or Laptop access to the world wide web.
The 56K modem as available in the ThinkPad is a voiceband modem capable of slows up to 56 Kbit/s. Most popular in the late 90s they are still used today in rural areas where broadband internet isnt as widely available.
