TASCAM FE-8 was developed collaboratively by TASCAM and Frontier Design Group, as a hardware extension to the FW-1884 digital audio workstation (DAW). The device allows users to control 8 additional audio channels. It provides 8 motorized, touch-sensitive faders to help users regulate the pitch of any sound produced using the FW-1884, as well as 8 rotary encoders, which experienced users can utilize to fine-tune audio frequencies. The product also provides a Record Arm button, which allows users to ?arm? (select) an audio track and start recording on that. The device supports FireWire connectivity technology, which lets users transmit audio tracks over fairly long distances, without much deterioration in quality.

The device utilizes FireWire technology for transmitting data to computers and audio devices. FireWire is another name for the IEEE1394 connectivity technology developed by Apple Computers way back in 1986. It has been developed on the basis of serial bus architecture, which allows for transfer of data at very high speeds. FireWire has the ability to support data transfer among as many as 63 different electronic devices connected in either daisy-chain or tree topology, and still maintain high quality in the data being transmitted to and from. This is the reason why this technology is often used in audio and video devices, in spite of the popularity and ubiquitous nature of its closest equivalent, USB.
