The ADI SoundMax AC97 Integrated Digital Audio Driver from HP powers a variety of products from HP that use ADI’s Soundmax AC97 audio chipset technology. This includes many workstations, among them the HP xw4200. The audio sampling rate for this device lies between 7 to 48 kHz. It is Sound Blaster compatible and supports OPL3 FM Synthesis. However, it cannot generate 3D surround sound. Its internal speaker consumes about 3W of power and has a fixed 7 band parametric EQ hardware equalizer. It has a microphone-in audio jack, as well as a line-in jack, a line-out jack and a headphone-out jack with 2.5 Ohms of output impedance.

The AC97 standard was originally brought to market by Intel as part of an attempt to provide high quality audio at lower prices. This was achieved by removing the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) element which is present in most conventional, stand-alone sound cards and assigning its tasks to the main processing unit of the computer with the help of specialised drivers, making the technology akin to that of software modems. Usually the AC97 codec has at least a 2-channel ADC and DAC, an I/O controller as well as a mixer. The codec is supported by a number of motherboards as well as soundcard manufacturers globally.
