The Sony Notebook LCD driver applies to the Sony PCG-GRV550 notebook computer, which is part of its VAIO series of laptops. This particular laptop features a 16 inch LCD display with an SXGA (1280×1024) resolution. This means that the physical aspect ratio of the display is not the usual 4:3, but rather 5:4, which results in the pixel aspect ratio being a steady 1:1. Because this is a laptop display, it can make the most of its screen size and the viewable area is actually larger than what is available in most 17? CRT monitors. The TFT LCD screen ensures all images are bright, clear and easy on the eye.

TFT LCD technology or Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display technology, which this device uses, utilizes thin film transistors to provide better overall image quality. This display technology is used in a wide variety of products in addition to monitors, like cellphones, PDAs, handheld gaming systems and TVs. In this technology, the pixels in the monitor are addressed in columns and rows instead of segments, which makes the creation of large displays possible and practical by reducing the number of connections required. Each pixel has a transistor which the corresponding column wire and row wire are attached to. This prevents a charged pixel from being drained before it is refreshed.
