The ALC231 from Realtek is a High Definition Audio IC and Codec that features one DAC, one ADC as well as a mono and filterless Class ? D speaker amplifier. The DAC and ADC both have four channels each, supporting 2 independent stereo outputs and 2 inputs. The codec also features support for digital stereo microphones and has a host of enhancements like echo cancellation and noise suppression that improve the quality of audio. In order to protect the power system of the unit, as well as the class-D amplifier that is integrated into the IC, the system features short circuit and overcurrent detection.

Among the many features of this codec is DirectSound 3D compatibility. DirectSound 3D is basically an extension of the DirectSound, which is a component of Microsoft DirectX. It handles various audio-related functions like sending audio data to audio cards, placing sounds in a 3D environment, using hardware accelerated buffers etc. DirectSound 3D was first released with DirectX 3, finally allowing developers to write audio code only once instead of multiple times for sound cards from different vendors. In later iterations, DirectSound 3D introduced even more features like support for cards using third party audio algorithms so that they could fully exploit DirectSound 3D's capabilities.
