The ATI Radeon 9700 Pro is equipped with 8 pixel pipelines, each having its own single texturing unit. This architecture, coupled with the 325-MHz core clock, allows the card to churn out a Pixel Fill Rate of nearly 2.6 billion every second. The memory data path built into the card is 256-bit wide, and the clock speed of the onboard memory equals 620 MHz. The peak memory bandwidth offered by the product equals 19.8 GB/sec. It can run games and other high end graphics applications at resolutions as high as 1600 x 1200, with full scene anti-aliasing (FSAA), as well as Anisotropic Filtering enabled.
The card supports SmartGart technology developed by ATI, which automatically checks the graphics card (if it is an ATI/AMD product) installed in the computer to find out the level of AGP supported by the GPU. Then, SmartGart automatically configures the Catalyst driver, ensuring that any instructions sent by the driver to the card can actually be handled by the hardware. For instance, if the GPU only supports 4x AGP, then SmartGart will ensure that the Catalyst driver does not send any instructions that can only be handled by a card supporting 8x AGP. In newer cards, this is handled automatically by the driver itself, but in earlier generation GPUs, this had to be handled separately by manufacturers, using technologies like SmartGart.AUTHOR
