The HID OMNIKEY 4321 is an ExpressCard 54 smart card reader that can be a replacement to the traditional PCMCIA expansion slots in laptops and notebook computers. The reader connects to the computer using a typical USB 2.0 interface. The device is three inches wide at its broadest point and weighs 26 grams, so it can be delivered anywhere via traditional mail. It features a lip in order to make insertion of cards easy and simple for the user. The reader can interface with the smart card at speeds of up to 420 KB per second as long as the card itself supports such speeds.
The smart card interface for this device has a variety of features designed for convenience and safety. In addition to the aforementioned lip that allows users to easily insert the card, the interface can also automatically detect the type of smart card being inserted as well as automatically power itself off when required. Safety measures like thermal protection and short circuit protection are also present. The USB 2.0 interface allows speed of up to 12 MB per second and allows it to be used on most standard laptops and computers without requiring a separate, special connector. Additionally, the interface allows the card to draw power from the computer itself, and thus requires no additional power source.AUTHOR
