The NVIDIA nForce 980a SLI is one of the Media and Communications Processor (MCP) type motherboards designed by NVIDIA to support various processors from the AMD stable, including those from the Phenom and Athlon series. Apart from this, the product supports PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) Express 2.0, featuring 3 PCI-E x16 slots and 5 generic PCI slots. Apart from that, the device offers out of the box support for NVIDIA FirstPacket, NVIDIA HybridPower, and NVIDIA GeForce Boost. It also supports NVCC Overclocking Support, which allows users to safely boost the clock speed of their processors, thereby improving performance when playing 3D games with high graphical details.

The motherboard offers protection for the data stored in hard disks by the user, by supporting NVIDIA MediaShield Storage, as well as NVIDIA MediaShield RAID technologies. MediaShield Storage automatically backs up files for the user in separate SATA disks (installed as per RAID 5 configuration) on a regular basis. In case of a disk failure, the user can easily restore files from the backups via an intuitive wizard. Besides, the configuration also allows faster access to data stored in the disks, and extra capacity for data storage. The technologies also incorporate an early warning system, which displays a visual alert to the user whenever one of the SATA disks in the RAID configuration starts failing.
