The QS57 Express Chipset is an Intel Platform Controller Hub (PCH) containing an extensive I/O feature set. These include Integrated SATA controllers, a USB host interface for up to 14 ports, integrated Gigabit Ethernet, analog and digital display ports (for CRT, HDMI, DVI, etc), enhanced DMA and interrupt controllers and timer functions, among others. It also supports Intel High Definition Audio, Rapid Storage Technology, ACPI Power Management Logic Support, and PCI Local Bus Specification for up to four pairs.
PCH, or a Platform Controller Hub, is a redesign of the traditional motherboard by Intel in response to the bottlenecking of speed. Because CPU speeds generally improve as technology grows but front side bus (FSB) speeds are more or less fixed, the PCH was made to avoid this bottleneck by separating the CPU and the other I/O functions of the motherboard. As a result, the terms northbridge and southbridge are archaic, as the CPU, the memory controllers and the PCI-E lanes became part of the CPU hub, while the rest were for the PCH.AUTHOR
