The Broadcom 5704C is a dual port device with one chip, used for dual LAN on motherboard operations as well as your typical NIC applications. It has a pair of integrated 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX/1000BASE-T transceivers and two 10/100/1000 triple speed MACs. It uses an SMBus 2.0 controller with an on-chip power circuit controller and wake-on-LAN (WOL) power switching circuit. It also supports priority queuing with an 802.1p Layer 2 priority encoding, with support for up to four priority queues. It also uses minimal power, with a 300-pin HBGA package.

The Broadcom 5704C is an Ethernet controller that is basically responsible for letting your computer connect to a Local Area network (LAN) through an Ethernet port. It allows different computers connected to the same network to communicate with each other using routable protocols such as IP. These controllers used to be expansion cards that you can plug in, but are now usually built into the motherboard. Newer server motherboards even have dual controllers built-in, just like the 5704C.
