Sandisk ImageMate SDDR-189 High Speed USB CompactFlash Card Reader/Writer supports a wide range of memory cards, and can be connected to a computer with the help of a USB 1.1 or 2.0 port. It is capable of providing maximum read/write speed of 34 MB/sec, which makes it one of the fastest devices in its category. The product is equipped with an LED to indicate whether it is powered on and active. The LED lights up when the reader is plugged in, and blinks rapidly when data transfer is being carried out. The product offers four slots for inserting different types of cards, although it is only capable of reading from (or writing to) one card at a time.
The device supports CompactFlash cards, which utilize a technology developed by Sandisk back in 1994. These cards are available in two main variants, Type 1 (with thickness of 3.3 mm) and Type 2 (with thickness of around 5 mm). Type 1 CompactFlash cards are used by many data storage devices, whereas digital cameras utilize Type 2 cards due to the much higher storage capacity those cards are capable of providing. CompactFlash cards were initially built to utilize the NOR-based memory architecture developed by Intel. However, later on, the architecture was modified by Sandisk to make the cards utilize NAND technology, which is much faster than NOR.AUTHOR
