Robert Metcalfe one of the men responsible for the development of the Ethernet. Ethernet was first brought to fruition at Xerox PARC in the early 1980s and is thought to have been partly a successor of the preceding networking technology called ALOHAnet, which was being used then by the University of Hawaii. Metcalfe himself had performed research on ALOHAnet before he participated in the creation of Ethernet, and this most likely set the stage for Ethernet?s invention. Ethernet is now used to interconnect appliances and various personal devices. By the year 2010, the market for Ethernet equipment reached figures in excess of $16 billion per year.
