SATO CL608e is a thermal transfer/direct thermal printer capable of printing at a speed of up to 200 mm/sec. It offers a maximum print resolution of 203 dpi. It supports media widths between 2? and 7?. The printer is capable of supporting as many as 12 mono-spaced bitmap fonts. It is equipped with a 32-Bit RISC processor and 18 MB of memory (Standard RAM: 16 MB, Flash Memory: 2 MB), which allows it to process large print queues. The printer can be connected to computers via a wide range of interfaces, including Serial Port (RS232), Ethernet Port (10/100 BaseT), Parallel Port (IEEE1284), coaxial cables, and USB.

Direct thermal printers, like the one described here, print images and text by applying heat to specific locations on sheets of specially coated thermochromic paper. The devices are equipped with rubber rollers for feeding paper to the printing head at a constant rate, while the printing heads, held against the paper with the help of springs, generate the heat necessary for printing. The coating applied to the paper turns black in locations where it is heated. Some printers are also capable of printing in a second color, apart from the default black. This color (usually red) is formed by heating the paper to a different temperature.
