CAN or controller area network allows different devices and microcontrollers to communicate even without the presence of a personal computer. The development of CAN bus started in 1983. In 1986, the first CAN bus protocol was released and shortly after 1 year the first CAN controller chips became available in the market. Intel and Philips became the first manufacturers of CAN controller chips. Over the years, higher implementations were created in CAN bus, which are now present in CAN interfaces like the Kvaser Leaf Professional HS.
