The Intel 82801JR I/O controller is an I/O hub for use in the 5500 series of Intel chipsets for the Xeon platform. This I/O controller is an I/O hub, or IOH. It has 12 USB ports, 6 Serial ATA ports, and an integrated LAN for up to Gigabit Ethernet speeds. It also includes advanced Intel technologies such as Intel Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O, Trusted Execution Technology, Active Management Technology, Quick Resume and Quiet System Technology, and Intel High Definition Audio, among others.
An I/O Hub, or IOH, is an Intel chipset design, codenamed X58 or Tylersburg, designed to connect multiple processors using an Intel Quickpath Interconnect, or QPI. It has no integrated memory controllers, since its supported processors are specially designed to have their own memory. Similar to AMD?s HyperTransport architecture, an IOH is typically analogous to a traditional northbridge in that it communicates with the processor using a high-bandwidth pathway, with the southbridge using DMI, and with peripherals using PCI-Express.AUTHOR
