The Epson GT-20000 is a flatbed color scanner with an optical resolution of 600 dots per inch (dpi), and a hardware resolution of 600×1200 dpi with a patented Micro Step Drive technology. It uses Epson?s Color MatrixCCD sensor and provides a bit depth of 48 internal and 24 external for color, and a bit depth of 16 internal and 8 external for black and white. With a xenon gas cold cathode fluorescent lamp, it scans at a speed of 3.8 msec per line for color and 1.3 msec per line for grayscale and line art images.

This device use a charge-coupled device (CCD) as its sensor. A CCD is a photosensitive chip that converts a pixel, or picture element, in a still image to an electrical charge. This charge?s intensity is directly equivalent to an equivalent color in the color spectrum. Some CCDs recognize up to 65,535 separate colors, and each color has an equivalent electrical charge. CCDs is a major part of digital imaging and is widely used in scanners, cameras, even in astronomical instruments, such as telescopes.
