An onboard chip is built onto the motherboard, as opposed to a sound card which is a separate card that slots into the motherboard (onboard chips cannot be replaced - only disabled, but sound cards can be swapped at any time). The setup program will install version 5.12.01.0644 onto your system and gives you the option to you configure the 8738 card/chip to assign speakers, disable the MIDI game port, assign the phone jacks and more.
